Hanford sentinel readers choice12/18/2023 ![]() ![]() Not in full, of course, but the amount we now owe is significantly more manageable than $9,790. Between her going over and beyond her normal duties for weeks and weeks - calling me with updates often, coupled with me acting like the proverbial pit bull dog, we finally, as of yesterday, got this bill paid. A woman (the head of the department) from the billing office for the helicopter medical transport service took me under her wing and assured me they were going to get this handled if I would just stand strong. And, in my opinion, the insurance companies are counting on this. They make it difficult enough, and have so much double talk scripted for them, that I can see how it could be easier for some people to just walk away and pay the bill themselves. There are a LOT of people who would have just walked away from this challenge. Should it have been? Absolutely not!!!!!!! And I can tell you one thing. Well - trying to get them to pay this bill was a challenge. Let the folks getting paid the big bucks handle these issues. And you've saved yourself a LOT of time and a LOT of grief. And that person will get your problem taken care of. Call that number and ask for this person by name. Go on-line, pull up annual reports or anything else you can find to get the name of the CEO or President of the company you're dealing with. You'll hang up the phone feeling as though you were successful, only to find out when the next bill arrives marked "no insurance info on file - please pay immediately" (or something else egregiously incorrect) that you were led down the garden path and you're going to get upset, and your stress level is going to skyrocket and you're going to end up going through a mess of medical tests only to be told (at the very least) "it's a stress induced incident." Go higher up the ladder to get results. You're probably not going to be successful. ![]() Not meaning to be ugly about this, but don't waste your time. Those first impressions of the “Psycho Killer” guy linger: During a SXSW Q&A in 2019, Byrne was asked about the “bleak outlook” of his early work, and whether or not he feels like he’s moved toward one of greater optimism. That any of these people might be looked at as a beacon of positivity in trying times feels like a relatively recent development. The one with the longest shadow is the young, twitchy beanpole at the forefront of Talking Heads, his intensity and his aloofness intimating autobiography into songs like “ Psycho Killer” and “ Warning Sign.” There’s the David Byrne who liked trying on costumes at the height of the band’s power ( including some he shouldn’t have): A big suit for Stop Making Sense, a cowboy hat for True Stories, the spectacles of a music-video televangelist who still persuades people that they want to hear “ Once In A Lifetime”’s inimitable studio flourishes in a concert setting-even though every single live version (including the one in American Utopia) fails to get great until the last “same as it ever was.” 2020 gives us conflicting Byrnes: The one moonlighting in the field of sanguine journalism with Reasons To Be Cheerful, and the egomaniacal asshole depicted by Talking Heads drummer Chris Frantz in the pages of his memoir, Remain In Love. There are many David Byrnes in the public imagination. “I kind of like their version better, and I didn’t know how they did it,” he concludes. There’s a book on the way, too, and, vaccine-willing, a second round of performances in New York City. Like a lot of reactive works of art released during the presidency of Donald Trump ( some of which are also making their television debuts in the lead-up to the 2020 general election), the film indirectly grapples with the history and the atmosphere that led to our current reality-though only American Utopia can lay claim to the ultimate existential question: “Well… how did I get here?” It was born from Byrne’s pre-2016 impulse to collect and collate news of genuine hope and human advancement, resulting in two, not-unrelated creative outlets: The editorial nonprofit Reasons To Be Cheerful, and the album that spawned the concert tour that was adapted into a Broadway show that is now a Spike Lee joint. It came back into my life at just the right time: David Byrne’s American Utopia debuted on HBO this past weekend in the wake of Supreme Court nominee Amy Coney Barrett’s farcical confirmation hearings, a foiled coup in my home state, and the still-raging COVID-19 pandemic-the scope, severity, and utter mishandling of which we can blame in part, like the two other items in that list, on a president who has returned to public life only shortly after becoming an active vector for a virus that has killed more than 220,000 Americans. And if the guards never reset after the alarm is raised, why wouldn’t the average player not simply reload their last save? Without a pattern to recognize and exploit, incapacitating/avoiding guards either requires RNG (which doesn’t feel good) or just attacking them straight out. Ever play a stealth game where the enemies patrolled randomly? It’s an exercise in frustration. There is a good reason why “more realistic” behavior is not often implemented: it is less fun. This is not a criticism of stealth gameplay, per se. ![]() This binary nature even extends to after the enemy is alerted, as almost every stealth game features the conceit that guards eventually completely forget that they watched their compatriots die, and go about their usual patrols. The enemy is fully active or they are incapacitated. If you are outside the cone of an enemy’s vision, you are hidden. When we talk about stealth games, what we’re really talking about is extremely simplified, often binary, gameplay. However, this may be more a systemic issue with stealth games generally. Indeed, I spent half the game with 11+ Augment Points banked just waiting for a situation in which I needed to spontaneously develop wall-punching or remote hacking skills. I am playing on the highest difficulty – Give Me Deus Ex – and just breezing my way through, even without Augments. The short version is that it is pretty much Human Revolution with new plot and Augments if you enjoyed the first game, then you will enjoy this one as well.īut one of the things I have noticed over the course of 30 hours is that… well, it’s easy.
